I’ve struggled with my weight most of my life. My journey into fitness began grudgingly when I tipped the scale at 250 pounds and knew that I had to make changes or live my life uncomfortable inside my own body. I tried almost every diet, diet pill, workout regime and even battled anorexia in my attempt to lose weight. I had the knowledge from my research on how to lose weight, but not the willpower for the execution. I hired a personal trainer to work with me and give me guidance and create a program that was designed for me. My first go at it was a bust - the trainer was distracted and was not keeping me, his paying client, in mind when we worked out. I moved on to another trainer and together we established realistic goals for weight loss and strength gain. I found that having a trainer made me accountable and gave me the extra push I needed to get moving and start losing weight.

I started losing weight. Then I learned that being healthy is not only about the number on the scale or circumference of my waist. These are parts of a whole. Being healthy is so much more! The food I put into my body is fuel, not just something tasty I eat when I am sharing a good meal or upset about something. Even though my weight was going down, I still felt unbalanced. So I started researching what healthy looked like. Being healthy does not mean being perfect!  According to the Merriam Webster Dictionary, healthy means, “Enjoying health and vigor of body, mind, or spirit (healthy implies full strength and vigor as well as freedom from signs of disease and emphasizes the absence of disease, weakness and malfunction; and implies appearance and behavior indicating soundness and balance.” Being healthy is finding the balance of mind, body and spirit to make a person whole and feel alive.
